When summer settles over downtown Minneapolis, all roads seem to lead to Loring Park. The fountains run, the footbridge to the Sculpture Garden fills with strollers and dog-walkers, and the green heart of the city throws open its gates for a season of festivals. And tucked right at the park’s leafy edge sits the Eugene J. Carpenter Mansion — 300 Clifton, where you can walk to nearly all of it without ever finding a parking spot.
Here’s how to spend a summer weekend in the neighborhood, and why staying steps from the park makes the whole thing easier.
Why Loring Park Is the Best Summer Address Downtown
Loring Park is the kind of place that rewards people who linger. There’s a pond ringed by gardens, shaded benches, the occasional patch of lawn yoga, and a graceful footbridge that carries you over the freeway to the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden and the iconic Spoonbridge and Cherry. The garden is free and open daily from early morning until midnight, so a sunrise stroll or an after-dinner wander is always on the table. Summer 2026 Events Right Outside Your Door
Twin Cities Pride — June 27–28
This weekend, Loring Park becomes the beating heart of one of the Midwest’s largest celebrations. Twin Cities Pride runs Saturday, June 27 (10 a.m.–7 p.m.) and Sunday, June 28 (10 a.m.–6 p.m.), with three stages of entertainment and more than 650 vendors filling the park. It’s the largest free Pride festival in the region, with a Youth Night kicking things off Friday evening. Staying across the street means you can drift home to rest your feet and head right back out.
Loring Park Art Festival — July 25–26
Later in the summer, the park hosts the Loring Park Art Festival, a two-day showcase of roughly 200 visual artists set against the ponds and formal gardens. It’s an easy, browse-at-your-own-pace afternoon of original art, music, and food — and one of the loveliest ways to see the park dressed up.
Minneapolis Aquatennial — July 18–26
The city’s beloved summer tradition, the Minneapolis Aquatennial, returns July 18–26 with a packed schedule downtown, capped by one of the best fireworks shows on the river. Loring Park puts you a short walk or trolley ride from the action.
The Walker & Friday Art-Making
Just over the footbridge, the Walker Art Center anchors the neighborhood with world-class contemporary art, and on summer Fridays the Sculpture Garden hosts drop-in art-making (10 a.m.–1 p.m., supplies included) that’s perfect for families. Pair it with a picnic and you’ve filled an afternoon.

Make a Day of It Around Town
When you’re ready to roam beyond the park, hop aboard Minneapolis Trolley Tours for a vintage-trolley spin through the city’s history — they run scenic, ghost, and true-crime routes, and their Best of Minneapolis things-to-do lists are a great planning shortcut. For an atmospheric evening, the haunted Pillsbury Club pours themed cocktails inside a historic mansion and runs year-round tours. And if your visit is stretching into weeks rather than days, Oakland’s on 9th offers furnished, month-to-month studios a few blocks away.
Where to Stay: A Historic Mansion at the Park’s Edge
After a day in the sun, there’s no better landing place than a Georgian mansion on the National Register of Historic Places. 300 Clifton occupies the 1906 Carpenter Mansion, with hand-painted murals, carved fireplaces, and distinct guest rooms — from the regal Crystal Mansion and Grand Edwardian to the cozy Coachman’s and Blacksmith’s Forge.
The real summer magic happens out back. The four-season garden hot tub sits under the stars in a private, hedged courtyard — a perfect way to unwind after a festival day. We made the case for it in our recent post on soaking under the stars downtown.
When the night cools, slip downstairs to Gertrude’s Cistern, the mansion’s speakeasy and haunted video lounge, where heated reclining seats and a little playful mystery wait below the stone arches. Mornings are for coffee on the veranda, watching the park wake up.
