Some cities make you drive to their art. Minneapolis tucks its world-class contemporary museum on a hillside at the edge of Loring Park — which happens to be our neighborhood. From the front door of 300 Clifton, the historic Eugene J. Carpenter Mansion, you can wander across the park, over the iconic blue-and-yellow pedestrian bridge, and arrive at the Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden before your coffee goes cold.
And this August, the Walker has stacked its calendar so generously that an art-lover’s weekend practically plans itself. Here’s what’s on — and why the finest Georgian mansion in Minnesota is the only sensible place to sleep afterward.
Two major exhibitions close in late August — don’t wait
Suzanne Jackson: What Is Love is the first major museum retrospective devoted to the painter’s six-decade career — more than 80 luminous works tracing her lifelong devotion to beauty as a political force. It closes August 23, 2026, so an early-August stay is your window.
One week later, on August 30, Christine Sun Kim: All Day All Night comes down too — a witty, moving exploration of sound from a Deaf artist’s perspective, told in musical notation and oversized infographics. See both in one unhurried afternoon, then walk home through the park.
New on August 6: Olalekan Jeyifous’s speculative worlds
Just as two shows wave goodbye, a new one arrives. Olalekan Jeyifous: Hydricosmic Litanies opens Thursday, August 6 with a free community opening at 6 pm, where the Brooklyn-based artist and architect joins curator Taylor Jasper to talk speculative world-building, water infrastructure, and the Mississippi River. Free evenings under the summer sky
The Walker’s hillside becomes downtown’s loveliest lawn in August. On Saturday, August 1, Free First Saturday fills the Sculpture Garden with giant puppets from In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre (10 am–5 pm, free). On Thursday, August 13, the Summer Art Lounge pairs local artists with community advocates for an evening of hands-on art-making, 5–8 pm.
The season’s grand finale is Sound for Silents on Thursday, August 20 at 7 pm — free outdoor films on the hillside with newly commissioned live scores by Bizhiki, the ensemble featuring S. Carey of Bon Iver and Joe Rainey Sr. Bring a blanket; we’ll keep the porch light on.
Putt-putt with a skyline, movies with a bite
Two more excuses to linger: Skyline Mini Golf, the Walker’s artist-designed rooftop course (through October 5, $12), and comedian Dallas Goldtooth’s film series Once Upon a Time in Manhood, which wraps August 14 with screenings of Die Hard (Aug 7), Boy (Aug 8 & 14), and Fight Club (Aug 13) in the Walker Cinema. Families take note: free art-making in the Sculpture Garden runs Friday mornings through August 28.

Eugene J. Carpenter, the lumber baron who built our mansion, was one of the great patrons of the Minneapolis arts scene — so ending an art-filled day beneath his hand-painted murals and carved fireplaces feels exactly right.
