There is a particular kind of Minneapolis evening that only happens in August. The air finally softens around eight o’clock, the light goes gold and then violet, and somewhere in the city a projector flickers on against a bedsheet-white screen while a few hundred people settle onto blankets. Best of all: it costs nothing. The Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board has been putting free concerts in the parks since 1892, and free movies since 2007 — and this August, several of them land within a few minutes of our front door in Loring Park.
Here is what is on the Music & Movies in the Parks calendar for August 2026, and how to build a very good evening around it.
Free Concerts in Loring Park: Tuesday Nights at 7
Loring Park is, for our guests, essentially a front yard — 34 acres of pond, willow trees, formal garden beds and the splashing Berger “Dandelion” Fountain, all of it a two-minute stroll from the mansion’s gate. Twice in early August, it also becomes a concert venue:
- Tuesday, August 4, 7:00 pm — Vittorio and The Bridges, indie pop
- Tuesday, August 11, 7:00 pm — Myallo, R&B
Bring a blanket. Bring a bottle of something and a wedge of cheese. There is a lovely bit of history in it, too — Loring was the very first parcel the young park board bought, in 1883, and it has hosted music and theater almost from the beginning. The park is named for Charles Loring, known since the 1880s as the “Father of Minneapolis Parks”; his monument at Lakewood Cemetery reads simply “Father of the Parks.”
Wednesday Movie Nights Downtown at The Commons
The downtown movie series runs Wednesdays on The Commons, the big green lawn at 425 Portland Avenue South — a little over a mile east of the mansion, which is a pleasant twenty-minute walk or a five-minute ride. August’s lineup leans gleefully nostalgic:
- Wednesday, August 5, 8:35 pm — Men in Black
- Wednesday, August 12, 8:25 pm — Four Samosas
- Wednesday, August 19, 8:15 pm — Wayne’s World
- Wednesday, August 26, 8:00 pm — Little Giants
- Wednesday, September 2 — The Greatest Showman closes out the downtown season
Notice how the start times creep earlier each week — the Park Board sets them by sunset, so always confirm on the official event calendar the day you go. The Commons also hosts free lunchtime concerts at noon on August 19 (Flutes & Low) and August 26 (Andra Suchy), if you would rather have your live music with a sandwich.
Saturdays on the Riverfront, Nightly Music at Lake Harriet
If you are staying a few nights, the series spreads across the city. Water Works at Mill Ruins Park — the terraced park below St. Anthony Falls, and one of the best places in Minneapolis to watch the light go down over the river — has Saturday concerts at 7:00 pm: RJ Vocal on August 1, the Jessie Street Band on August 8, Wren + Wilde on August 15, and 32nd Street Jazz on August 22.
And the Lake Harriet Bandshell, about fifteen minutes southwest, has something on nearly every single night of the month — concert bands, flamenco, symphonies, blues. It is the most reliably charming free ticket in the city.
For a daytime companion to all this, the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is free, open daily from 6 am to midnight, and connected to Loring Park by the Irene Hixon Whitney Bridge — you can walk from our garden gate to Spoonbridge and Cherry without ever crossing a busy street. Look again at those dates: the Loring Park concerts are Tuesdays, the downtown movies are Wednesdays. - A blanket or a low chair. Nothing tall enough to block the person behind you.

- Bug spray, if you are the kind of person mosquitoes love. Loring Pond is right there.
- The forecast. Weather cancellations are posted on the series’ social channels; when in doubt, check before you walk over.
No tickets, no reservations, no admission. That is the whole point of the program.
Where to Stay: A Mansion Two Minutes From the Park
300 Clifton is the historic Eugene J. Carpenter Mansion, on the National Register of Historic Places and often called the finest Georgian architecture in Minnesota. Inside are hand-painted murals, carved fireplaces and a handful of very distinct rooms — the Crystal Mansion, the Grand Edwardian, and the Estate rooms in the old carriage house, including the Coachman’s Quarters, the Blacksmith’s Forge and the Hayloft. Outside are English gardens, a fountain, and the hot tub.
Fill the rest of the days easily: a vintage Minneapolis Trolley Tour boards at the haunted Pillsbury Club and covers ghosts, true crime and skyline views (their things-to-do lists are a good local shortcut).
