Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026. If you are coming to Minneapolis for it — or if you live here and the guest room is already spoken for — the honest problem is not what to do on the day. It is where everyone sleeps.
This is a guide to solving that, from a historic mansion five minutes from downtown, and to the long weekend around it: Thursday through Sunday, November 26–29.
The real Thanksgiving problem: the house is full
Every family has a version of this. The hosts have one spare bedroom and four sets of visitors. Someone ends up on an air mattress. Someone else drives an hour each way. Two cousins share a room and neither sleeps.
A bed and breakfast solves it without anyone having to be diplomatic about it. Book two or three rooms at 300 Clifton, and the people who need quiet get quiet, the people who need to be at the house by nine in the morning are ten minutes away, and nobody has to host anybody. The mansion has seven distinct guest rooms — the Crystal Mansion, the Georgian, the Grand Edwardian, the Coachman’s, the Forge, the Hayloft and the Estate Rooms — so a group can spread out and still be under one roof.

What is actually happening in Minneapolis that weekend
A Christmas Carol opens before Thanksgiving
The Guthrie Theater’s A Christmas Carol runs November 11 through December 27, 2026 on the Wurtele Thrust Stage — this year adapted by Lavina Jadhwani and directed by Addie Gorlin-Han. That means it is already open over Thanksgiving weekend, which makes it the single easiest thing to put four generations into at once.
One important date if you are planning now: single tickets for A Christmas Carol go on sale September 8, 2026. Thanksgiving-weekend performances are the first to go. Details are on the Guthrie’s 2026–2027 season page. The theater is at 818 South 2nd Street, on the river.
Museums, for the day everyone needs to get out of the house
The Minneapolis Institute of Art has free general admission, which makes it the default answer for a mixed-age group with no agenda. The Walker Art Center is a short walk from us, and the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden next to it is free and open daily — a good place to walk off a large meal, even in a coat.
Holiday-week hours differ from ordinary hours at every museum in the city. Check each venue’s own visit page for the week of November 26 rather than trusting a general listing.
Outside, if the weather cooperates
Late November in Minneapolis can be anything from forty degrees and grey to genuinely wintry. Loring Park is directly across from the mansion and is a fine short walk in any of it. If it has turned properly cold, that is an argument for coming back to the garden hot tub rather than fighting it.
Why the mansion works for this particular holiday
Thanksgiving is a holiday about being in a house. It is a strange fit for a chain hotel and a lobby with a television.
300 Clifton is the Eugene J. Carpenter Mansion, listed on the National Register of Historic Places — hand-painted murals, carved fireplaces, English gardens, and what is often called the finest Georgian architecture in Minnesota. You can read the history of the house if you like that sort of thing. What matters on a November weekend is that it feels like somebody’s home rather than a corridor of doors.
Three things guests tend to use hardest at this time of year:
- The four-season garden hot tub, which is at its best in cold weather and under a clear night sky.
- Gertrude’s Cistern, the speakeasy-style video lounge downstairs with heated reclining seats — useful on the Friday after, when nobody wants to leave the building.
- The common areas, which are large enough that a family can actually sit together without booking a function room.
Breakfast is not served on site; there is complimentary coffee in the common area, which on a Thanksgiving-week morning is the amenity people actually want first.
One good reason to book direct
Both are direct-booking only, both are valid during your stay, and both are worth checking schedules for before you plan around them.
Book early — Thanksgiving is not a shoulder date
Thanksgiving week is one of the few weeks of the year when everyone needs the same rooms on the same nights. If you are reading this in the autumn, you are early, which is the correct time to be reading it.
