Loring Park, right outside the door
300 Clifton sits on the edge of Loring Park, thirty-four acres of pond, footpaths and old elms that the Minneapolis Park Board bought in 1883 as the city’s very first park. In winter the pond becomes an ice rink, and the park board lists an annual Winterfest at Loring Park held in February — check their calendar closer to the date for the exact day, because it moves. From the north edge of the park, the Irene Hixon Whitney Bridge carries you over the freeway straight into the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, which is free, open year-round, and startlingly good in snow.
Music, theatre and art, all indoors
The serious February advantage of Loring Park is that almost everything worth doing is a short walk or a five-minute ride away. Orchestra Hall is on Nicollet Mall. The Guthrie Theater is on the river, and its Endless Bridge lobby is worth the trip on its own even if you are not seeing a show. The Minneapolis Institute of Art is free every day and about a mile south. Any of the three makes a Valentine’s evening without requiring anyone to stand outside in February.
A Valentine’s night that never leaves the block
