How Far in Advance Should You Book a Bed and Breakfast in Minneapolis?

Short answer: it depends on which Minneapolis you are coming for. On an ordinary midweek night, a historic mansion like 300 Clifton can often be booked a few days out. On a Vikings Sunday, marathon weekend, MEA break or the week before Christmas, the rooms are spoken for long before the date arrives. This guide walks through the calendar so you can book early enough, and not a moment earlier than you need to.

Why a bed and breakfast fills faster than a hotel

A downtown hotel has hundreds of rooms. 300 Clifton has eight distinct guest room types across the Main Mansion and the Carriage House, from the shared-bath Estate Rooms to the king Crystal Mansion room with its chandelier. That is the whole inventory. When a big weekend lands, there is no overflow floor to open. It also means the calendar tells you something a hotel’s never will: if the room you want is still open, you can usually see exactly how many nights it has left.

The dates that book out first

These are the weekends we watch every year, with the 2026–27 dates verified on the organisers’ own sites. For any of them, six to eight weeks ahead is comfortable. Inside a month, you are choosing from what is left.

Vikings home Sundays at U.S. Bank Stadium

The 2026 Vikings schedule puts the Dolphins in town on October 4, the Colts on October 25, the Bills on a Monday night, November 9, then the Falcons on November 29, the Panthers on December 6 and the Lions under the Sunday-night lights on December 20. The stadium is a short ride from Loring Park, and visiting fans book the boutique rooms first. Note that October 4 is also the Twin Cities Marathon’s Sunday, so that weekend is a genuine double-header downtown.

Twin Cities Marathon weekend, October 2–4

Marathon weekend runs October 2–4 this year, with the 10 mile, half and full marathon on Sunday the 4th. Runners book months ahead because they have already paid an entry fee, and they want a quiet room, a hot tub and a 3:00 PM check-in the day before. Twin Cities In Motion has announced that from 2027 the weekend moves to mid-October, so next year’s window shifts too. We wrote a full guide to staying here for marathon weekend.

MEA weekend, October 15–18

Minnesota schools close for the Education Minnesota conference on Thursday, October 15, which turns that Thursday-to-Sunday into the busiest family travel weekend of the fall. Children are welcome here, and the Hayloft’s wagon bed is a hit; see our MEA weekend guide for the rooms that suit a family.

Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s

Thanksgiving falls on November 26 this year, and the mansion’s dining room is built for exactly the kind of family gathering that outgrows a single house. The holiday weeks in December are the one stretch where whole-house bookings are common, so if you want a single room between Christmas and New Year’s, book it in October. If you want the whole mansion, ask even earlier.

Wedding season and the State Fair

From May through October, Saturday nights carry wedding blocks. If you are a guest at a Minneapolis wedding, book the moment you have the date; our wedding-guest guide explains why. And the 2027 Minnesota State Fair already has its dates posted, August 26 through Labor Day, September 6, which is a fair warning about how early some people plan.

When you can afford to wait

Sunday through Thursday nights outside the dates above are the easy ones. A romantic midweek escape in January or February, a business stay near the convention center, a quiet garden weekend in early June: these can usually be booked a week or two out, sometimes days. The trade-off is choice. The last room open is more likely to be an Estate Room than the Georgian, so if a particular room matters to you, treat every stay like a busy one. Our room-by-room guide helps you decide which one that is.

Three things booking early gets you

First, the room you actually want. Second, the add-ons: the garden hot tub and Gertrude’s Cistern movie lounge are private, bookable experiences, and on a full weekend the evening slots go to whoever asked first. Third, the perks of booking direct: our best available rate, plus a $20 Pillsbury Club dining voucher and a $20 Minneapolis Trolley voucher per stay. Check-in is from 3:00 PM and check-out by 10:00 AM, with early or late add-ons for $25 each when the calendar allows, and the calendar allows far more often when you are not squeezed between two sold-out nights.

A simple rule of thumb

If your trip is tied to a date on someone else’s calendar, a game, a race, a wedding, a school break, book six to eight weeks out. If your trip is tied only to your own calendar, two weeks is usually plenty, and midweek is the most forgiving of all. Either way, the reflecting fountain, the carved fireplaces and the stars over the hot tub are the same on a Tuesday as on a sold-out Saturday. Check availability at 300 Clifton and pick your date while it is still yours to pick.
