If your student is at the University of Minnesota, the first weekend of October is already spoken for. Family Weekend 2026 runs Friday, October 2 through Sunday, October 4 — and it lands on the single busiest weekend the Twin Cities will see this autumn. The Gophers host Michigan. Forty thousand runners take over both downtowns. And every hotel room within a reasonable radius of campus is competing for the same three nights.
Here is what is actually happening that weekend, and why a historic mansion in Loring Park is a better answer than a chain hotel eight miles out.
When exactly is U of M Family Weekend 2026?
Gopher Family Engagement has Family Weekend on the calendar for October 2–4, 2026. Programming begins at noon on Friday and wraps up by 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, so most families plan on two nights — Friday and Saturday — with some arriving Thursday to make a longer trip of it.
Friday check-in runs from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Northrop Auditorium, and the evening belongs to the Gopher Get-Together in the Campus Club on the fourth floor of Coffman Memorial Union, with live music and a view down the river toward the downtown skyline. Saturday fills up early: yoga and pickleball at RecWell, Gopher Games in the Whole, a tailgate brunch across the dining halls, and then the game.

The Saturday everyone is planning around: Gophers vs. Michigan
Saturday, October 3 is Minnesota vs. Michigan at Huntington Bank Stadium — comfortably the biggest home date on the Gophers’ fall calendar. One warning worth passing along: the kickoff time will not be announced until roughly ten days beforehand, which means you may be booking a room before you know whether you are looking at an 11:00 a.m. start or an evening one. The official Gopher Athletics schedule is the place to watch for it.
Family Weekend registrants can buy special-rate family tickets for the game through Gopher Athletics; football tickets are sold separately from the weekend registration itself. The Alumni Association’s Ski-U-Mania tailgate opens on the McNamara Alumni Center plaza two hours before kickoff.
Two more ticketed matchups bracket the weekend for families who arrive early: volleyball vs. Northwestern on Thursday, October 1, and soccer vs. Maryland on Friday, October 2. Both carry discounted Family Weekend pricing. If your Thursday is free anyway, that is a good reason to add a night.
Why rooms are genuinely tight that weekend
This is the part families discover too late. The same three days are also Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend, which Twin Cities In Motion has scheduled for October 2–4, 2026 — 5K, 10K and family races on Saturday, then the 10 Mile, Half Marathon and Marathon on Sunday morning, finishing in St. Paul after a course that starts downtown Minneapolis. Add the downtown events already stacked onto that Sunday and you have a weekend where the entire metro is booked at once.
The University arranges hotel blocks for Family Weekend at a couple of downtown properties, and its own guidance is blunt about it: those blocks tend to fill quickly, even as rooms are added each year. If you are reading this in early September, you are still comfortably ahead — but not by much. We wrote separately about what else is stacked onto October 4, and about the September Gopher home games if you are making more than one trip this season.
Where 300 Clifton fits
300 Clifton is the Eugene J. Carpenter Mansion, an 1880s house on the National Register in Loring Park — the green edge of downtown Minneapolis, a few minutes from the Walker Art Center and the Sculpture Garden. It is the finest Georgian architecture in Minnesota, and it works unusually well for a family weekend for one simple reason: it is a house, not a corridor of identical doors.
Families travelling together tend to take two or three rooms and treat the common rooms as their own. The Crystal Mansion and the Grand Edwardian are the large rooms; the Georgian Room and the Estate Rooms suit a couple or a single parent making the trip. Downstairs there are carved fireplaces, hand-painted murals, and English gardens; outside there is a four-season hot tub under the stars, which is exactly what you want after a day of walking a very large campus in October weather. Below all of it sits Gertrude’s Cistern, a speakeasy and video lounge with heated reclining seats — the correct place to end a Saturday when the game ran long.

Getting between Loring Park and campus
Loring Park to the East Bank is a short hop. The METRO Green Line runs from downtown Minneapolis straight through the University campus, and the Metro Transit trip planner will give you the current schedule and the nearest boarding point on the day — worth checking rather than assuming, since game-day service and downtown street closures both shift things. Driving is straightforward too, but on a Michigan Saturday the campus lots are the last thing you want to be solving at 10 a.m.; our guide to parking in downtown Minneapolis covers the ramps and meter rules. Flying in? Here is how to get from MSP to Loring Park.
Parking is available on site at the mansion, which removes the other half of the problem.
Make a weekend of it, not just a game
Most families overshoot on campus time and undershoot on the city. Early October is the good half of Minneapolis autumn — the Loring Park paths are a two-minute walk from the front door, and the Chain of Lakes is a short drive west. If Sunday morning is blocked by marathon road closures anyway, that is a good morning to stay on this side of the river.
Two easy additions from the same doorstep: a Minneapolis Trolley sightseeing tour, which departs from the Pillsbury Club mansion a few blocks away, and dinner at the Club itself. Guests who book directly with us get vouchers toward both.
And if this trip is really a scouting mission — a student moving to Minneapolis, a family member starting a longer stretch of work at the U or at the medical centre — Oakland’s on 9th does furnished month-to-month studios downtown, no contract required.
Book before the blocks go
October 2–4 is one of maybe three weekends a year when Minneapolis genuinely runs out of rooms. Family Weekend, a Michigan game and a marathon do not usually land on top of one another. If you already know you are coming, book now rather than in mid-September.
Check availability at 300 Clifton for Thursday October 1 through Sunday October 4, or call and we will help you work out which combination of rooms fits your family.
